A 2,500-page report conducted by an independent inquiry into allegations of abuse and subsequent cover-ups within France’s Catholic Church has declared that a “veil of silence” allowed clergy to assault victims for decades.
Jean-Marc Sauve, the president of the commission that examined the allegations, found the French Catholic Church had shown “a profound and even cruel indifference towards the victim” up until the 2000s, condemning the church’s hierarchy and dysfunction for failing to stop it.
Over the past 70 years, the inquiry established roughly 216,000 children were the victims of abuse, with that number potentially growing to 330,000 when including lay members. Out of a total of 115,000 priests and clergy during that time, evidence showed 2,900 to 3,200 were accused of abuse.
Sauve blamed a “veil of silence” within the French Catholic Church, ensuring that victims were “not believed, not heard,” and allowing “systemic” abuse to proliferate for decades unchallenged.
“That is devastating, because the ratio between 216,000 and 3,000, it’s one aggressor for 70 victims. That is terrifying for the French society, for the Catholic Church,” Olivier Savignac, head of victims’ association ‘Parler et Revivre’, which means ‘Speak Out and Live Again’, said ahead of the report’s release.
The commission had spent two and a half years examining evidence, speaking to victims and witnesses, and investigating archives from the church, courts, police, and press, dating back to the 1950s. A telephone line established to field calls from potential victims or those who knew someone who’d been abused took around 6,500 calls.
The inquiry has handed 22 allegations of crimes to prosecutors for them to consider if charges can be brought against alleged abusers. More than 40 cases deemed criminal could not be prosecuted, as they are too old, even though the alleged assailants are still alive. Those cases will be provided to church officials to be handled within the clergy.

Unfortunately, this is nothing new and happens more often than most people will ever know or realize. The children damaged by this powerful institution will never know Justice, and the Catholic Church just continues on – untouched, unmarred, free to continue to move forward to do whatever they wish. Collecting riches, taking tithes, living in the lap of luxury, the Pope safely ensconced behind the fortress, walled nation of Vatican City (I’ve been there, the wealth is immense – at least, that which you can see, who knows what is in the vaults or how much is siphoned off into the Vatican Bank). Where is the righteous anger against this horrid, filthy, vile practice of child abuse done by supposed “spiritual” practitioners of God’s Word? Priests and Nuns, by the way, who LEAD followers of Christ in worship! Why doesn’t anyone of Catholic faith do absolutely anything to put an end to this putrid practice of harming, molesting and raping young boys and girls? Anyone????
This isn’t “Catholic” bashing. The truth is right here, it is being uncovered for the entire world to see, it has been for the last few decades. Children, the most vulnerable amongst us are being severely harmed and no one does nothing, especially Catholics. Personally, I don’t care if people are upset with me or this post and think it is an attack on them and their precious “Catholic Church”.
WHAT ABOUT THESE CHILDREN THAT WERE RAPED AND MOLESTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN? WHAT ABOUT THEM? Who is saving them? Who is helping them? Who is paying for their medical care now or in the future (being raped as a child isn’t going to lead to an easy life, it will be difficult for them, fraught with many obstacles, and that’s assuming they don’t commit suicide, take drugs/alcohol to numb the pain, etc.). WHY ARE PEOPLE WORRIED ABOUT AN INSTITUTION THAT IS WEALTHY BEYOND IMAGINATION, BUT NOT GOD’S VERY BLESSINGS – CHILDREN?
I will NEVER understand why people sweep this abominable practice under the rug and continue to praise and venerate the Catholic Church after numerous reports of pervasive child abuse are reported. If this is what Christianity stands for, I want no part of it. How could anyone want a part in this?
