How to Get Drunk in the Spirit

The best way to get drunk in the Spirit is by entering into the presence of God. We should not seek to get drunk or after any manifestations of the Spirit, those things come as a by-product of encountering His presence. Our goal should be to seek God, wholeheartedly, to draw close to Him.

So to answer the question of how to get drunk in the Spirit, we must first answer the question about how to enter into the presence of God. Once we know how to do that, getting filled with the Spirit will follow as a result.

Entering into the presence of God comes as a result of spending time with God in prayer, worshiping Him. To people who don’t know God, this sounds like a painful chore because they don’t know what it means to pray. People think it is a big burden to pray. They think of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gesthemane. They think it requires getting on your knees and reciting a list of requests of all the things you want God to do for you. Because of this misconception, people avoid prayer altogether. They can think of a million things they would rather do.

But prayer is not a painful chore, it is a wonderful encounter with a loving God. It is a heavenly download of peace, joy and love. It is the release from every earthly burden that was weighing us down. It is the time when we get filled with the Spirit of God so much that we actually get drunk in the Spirit.

My daily encounters with God all start with turning on anointed music. You can certainly encounter God without any music playing, but I find it much easier with it. King David recognized this when he wrote, “Come before Him with joyful singing” (Psalm 100:2).

Paul and Silas recognized this when they were locked up in prison. They entered into the presence of God by praying and singing hymns of praise to God. In fact, they were singing so loud the Bible says the other prisoners were listening to them (Acts 16:25). Paul also instructed believers to sing to the Lord in Ephesians 5:19 and again in Colossians 3:16.

The right kind of music with the right kind of words can help usher you into the presence of God. The Holy Spirit can quicken the words to make them come alive and relevant to you. He can speak to you through the lyrics. I am not talking about the pop music you hear playing on Christian radio stations. A lot of the songs played there are more focused on us than on God. I don’t have time to waste listening to music like that.

I spend at least two hours at the start of every day entering into the presence of the Lord. Many times it is more than that. Some people would consider that to be a big waste of time. But my time is very valuable to me so I avoid wasting even a single minute. So when I come before the Lord, I try to enter into His presence right away. So I don’t waste time playing music that does not usher me into the presence of God.

The best music I have found is the music performed by hundreds of musicians at the International House of Prayer, which is known as IHOP. The music never stops there. They literally play 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They have about 500 musicians currently on staff with many different teams that perform in two hour segments. Their music is broadcast live with streaming audio and video from their website.

With so many musicians on their staff, some are better than others. My personal favorite is Misty Edwards. She is truly amazingly talented and anointed. Besides her I also like Anna Blanc, Laura Hackett, Audra Lynn, Cecelia Reagle and Jessica Barron. There are so many great musicians there that I have not had a chance to listen to all of them.

There are lots of reasons why I like the music from IHOP. The biggest reason is because the lyrics are either straight from scriptures or are prophetic declarations of the Lord speaking to us. Besides that I also like the fact that they take their time. They are not trying to sell anything so their songs are not limited to the normal 3-5 minutes for songs played on the radio. IHOP songs often play for 20-30 minutes each and sometimes much longer than that.

If you visit their site, check out the archives section because it allows you to choose the musicians you like and play them on demand any time you want. The videos are interesting to watch but also can be very distracting when trying to enter into the presence of God. I recommend listening with your eyes closed.

So my “prayer time” is a lot different from what most people think of when they think of prayer. The music not only makes it more fruitful but also more enjoyable. So the music is an important part of it but there is a lot more to learn about encountering God.

We have to know where to focus our efforts in prayer. Rather than struggling to make God move in our behalf, our prayers should follow the same priorities that Jesus gave us when he taught us how to pray in Matthew 6:8-15. Jesus started his prayer by connecting himself with God by saying, “Our Father who art in heaven.” Then he gave honor and praise to God by saying “hallowed by Your name.” He did not start by asking God to do anything for him. This is a very important point!

Just before He gave us the Lord’s prayer, He pointed out in Matthew 6:7 the big mistake the Gentiles make when they pray. They are constantly reminding God about the things they need but Jesus instructed us not to act like them because God already knows what we need before we ask Him.

So Jesus set aside his own personal requests and started his prayers with more important priorities of connecting to the Father, giving honor and praise to the Father, and asking for the kingdom of God to come and the will of God to be done on earth as it is already being done in heaven. These are the important priorities and these are the things we should start with when we come to God to pray! Jesus repeated these same priorities in His other teachings. He instructed us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, then all of the things we need will be added to us. (Matthew 6:33)

The Lord’s prayer was never meant to be a word-for-word prayer for us to repeat to God. That misses the whole point of it. He was teaching us the order of priorities for our prayers. He was showing us how we can connect to the realm of God, how we can enter into the presence of God.

Jesus began His prayer with the most important priorities. Our prayers should follow His example with these same priorities:

1. “Our father, who is in heaven” – First, we must connect with God by entering into His presence in the realm where God is, which is the realm of heaven.

2. “Hallowed by Your name” – This is how we enter into His realm. We reverence Him and respect Him by giving Him the praise and honor that He deserves.

3. “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” – Once you have entered into His presence, the next priority is asking Him to completely have His way in every area of your life and in the whole earth. Our wholehearted request should be for Him to bring every area into conformity with what He wants it to be.

I am not going to continue going through the whole prayer. My point here was to show the top priorities Jesus gave us. By coming to Him in this way, we can have confidence that we are in one accord with Him.

These things can take some time. It is not a matter of repeating a few lines and moving on to the next topic. We are not attempting to check these things off the list so we can move on. Depending on what has happened since your last encounter with Him, it might take a short time or a long time to get through these first points. We should be in no hurry to move on until we have the full assurance that these first issues are all cleared.

In the course of spending a day on the earth, our conscience gets clouded so that we lose sight of the things of God and offended by our own wrong actions causing us to lose confidence in our relationship with God. As a result, there is some distance that comes between God and us. The primary goal of our prayer time is to remove all of the distance that has come between God and us. This is why our heart cries out for more of His kingdom to come and His will to be done. This is what it means to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, so that we can have right standing with Him.

These things must be dealt with first because otherwise we have no faith to come before God to ask Him for other things. Anyone who thinks they have no distance between them and God has misjudged himself or herself. Their prayers will be hindered until they humble themselves.

What a wonderful feeling it is to know we have taken our heart before God and openly confessed the areas where we have come short. When we humble ourselves in this way, the Spirit of God fills us and washes away every unclean thing. Any distance that has come between us and God is taken away so we are once again restored to a close fellowship with Him.

This must be a daily process. We cannot allow days to pass with distance between us and God. There might be many days when we are not aware of anything wrong that we have done. Even then we still need to draw near to God. As we come before Him humbly, the Holy Spirit prays through us and washes us so that we can stay close to Him. If there is something important affecting our relationship with Him that we have forgotten, He will bring it to our remembrance so we can confess it and be cleansed.

There is no set amount of time it takes to complete this process. Every day is different and every person is different. There will be a sense of completion when it is done so we know all is well. The goal is to remove all the distance so we are totally in harmony with Him.

By praying in this way, I have been able to consistently enter into the realm of God’s Spirit every day for many years. Following these priorities allows me to open the door to the realm of God and enter in.

I know many other believers who have never entered into that realm and do not even know they have access to it. Many believers live their whole lives without knowing they have access to that realm. We all have access to it any time we want. Those who are hungry for it and willing to do whatever it takes will enter and receive from God.

Do not make the mistake that one friend of mine was making. He had experienced the presence of God at different times in the past. However, he was not entering into the presence of God on a daily basis because he thought it was up to God to come and manifest whenever He decided to for some mysterious reasons. I showed him how it was possible to enter into that realm any time he wanted to. When he learned that, he started entering in every day and never looked back.

As a side note, I always play anointed worship music during my prayer time. It helps me to get focused on God and helps to create an atmosphere that welcomes the Spirit of God.

Heaven is available in the earth realm here and now. Jesus said the kingdom has come and the keys have been given to us. We already have all the access we will ever need but unless we act on it we will not enter and we will not receive.

When you follow the example given to us in the Lord’s prayer and follow the priorities that Jesus followed there, you will move into that realm. When you do these things day after day consistently seeking Him with all of your heart, you will be amazed to see what happens. The Spirit of God will show up. He will manifest His awesome presence in your midst. I am not talking about seeing Him with your natural eyes but you will sense His presence with your spirit. You will know exactly when you have entered into His presence. It is just as real as when another person walks into the room where you are. You perceive their presence when they show up.

As you spend time with God in this way, He will fill you with His Spirit. How He does that is a mystery to me, but that is okay because He handles that part and He is more than able to do it.

If you start your prayers in this way, the other things that are on your heart will eventually get taken care of too.

Since God is a Spirit, anyone who wants to communicate with Him must communicate in the realm of the Spirit. So if you want to fulfill the plan of God for your life, it is essential to learn how to follow the leading of His Spirit and how to get filled with His Spirit. There is no other way to carry out the will of God for your life. There is no other way to fulfill your God-given purpose for your life.

In fact, the Bible says it is only those people who are led by the Spirit who are the sons of God (Romans 8:14). The flip side of this truth is that anyone who is not led by the Spirit is NOT a son of God. No matter how religious you think you are, if you are not being led by the Spirit of God you are not his son or daughter.

As important as this topic is, you would think it would be the central focus of every pastor of every church but that is not the case. In fact, this topic gets very little attention. As a result, many believers have very little knowledge or understanding of what it means to be filled with the Spirit or to be led by the Spirit.

Those who learn to drink the heavenly wine and get drunk with the Spirit of God will overflow with the riches of the kingdom of God because when you are drunk with the Spirit you will find within you everything needed to walk in the righteousness of God, to be filled with the peace of God and the joy of the Lord. The love of God will resonate so strongly within you that you will find yourself overflowing with love for other people.

In your natural strength, you can muster up some love, some peace and some joy. But your natural strength falls way short of what you must have to live for God and to advance His kingdom. The Bible says even sinners love those who love them, but that is not good enough for the kingdom of God. Jesus commanded his followers to live by a much higher standard:

But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:44-48)

How is it possible to love someone who is stabbing you in the back, spreading lies about you, trying to destroy you? How do you remain sexually pure when everyone else around you is obsessed with having sex? How do you keep perfect peace in your heart when your house payment is past due and in foreclosure? How do you keep a joyful attitude when you have been laid off from your job? These things can only be done through the power of the Spirit. In the natural realm it is impossible.

When an unbeliever sees a believer claiming to live in victory over life’s challenges, they are very skeptical and often conclude the believer is faking it. Anyone who has relied on natural strength knows how hard it is to live in victory. But by tapping into the hidden power of the Spirit, the impossible becomes possible.

Pastor Rodney Howard-Brown shares the story of how God spoke to him years ago saying, “I want my people drunk!”

He then asked the Lord, “Why do you want your people drunk?”

The Lord then told him, “Because my people are already drunk with the spirit of this world, but I want them to be drunk with my spirit.”

One day I was at a park sharing the love of Jesus with total strangers, which is not something my flesh likes to do but I was doing it anyway because I believe the Lord had told me to. After I was done, I returned to this nice chair where I had been sitting earlier. I had really wanted to just stay in the chair the whole time and skip the witnessing but I obeyed and was very glad that I did.

When I got back to the chair the Lord spoke to me saying, “Now sit down in the chair and I am going to fill you with my spirit and the things of the natural realm are going to begin to seem unreal to you.”

After he said that I began feeling very drunk. The park was a beautiful place by the sea but after I got drunk in the Spirit it was even more beautiful. Everything was so much better. The clouds were beautiful. The trees were amazing to look at. I felt like sitting there forever. It was wonderful! It was just like He said. The things of the natural realm began to seem unreal to me.

I share that story because I believe the word the Lord gave me explains what it means to get drunk in the Spirit. As stated earlier, when the things of the spiritual realm become more real to you than the things of the natural realm, then you are drunk in the Spirit. This is why it is so important for every believer to get drunk in the Spirit and stay that way all day every day. You will not be able to stand against all the challenges and cares of this life unless you can somehow see the situation from a different perspective. Getting filled with the Spirit allows you to see your life from a different perspective.

If things were always exactly the way they appear to be then you would not need to get drunk in the Spirit. But things are not always as they appear to be. There is more to life than just the natural realm that we can see and hear with our natural eyes and ears. The spiritual realm is more real than the natural realm and far higher than the natural realm because the spiritual realm originally created everything in the natural realm. The natural realm is only temporary but the spiritual realm is eternal. So if you want to get a better perspective on your life, forget the way things appear to be in the natural realm and tap into the way things really are in the spiritual realm.

By getting immersed in the Spirit, you can begin to see your life and your circumstances in a totally different light. You can stop being the victim of the pressures of this life, the cares, the fears, the worries that will control your life if you allow them to. Instead you can enjoy awesome peace, joy and love. You can have these abundantly supplied to you every day regardless of the way things appear to be in the natural realm.

By getting saturated in the Spirit, you can see your life from God’s perspective. You can know that He has only good things in store for you if you will only believe Him and trust Him. You cannot do this on your own natural strength but that is okay because you don’t have to. By getting drunk in the Spirit you can tap into unlimited strength, unlimited wisdom, knowledge, understanding, even financial provision can manifest for you in the natural realm if you learn to get filled with the Spirit of God and stay filled by seeking Him first in all that you do.

People get drunk with wine for all sorts of reasons. Some people drink for fun times while others get hooked on it to help them cope with life. Drinking spiritual wine works the same way. There were many people in that service the night I first tasted the heavenly wine and many of them experienced getting drunk for the first time the same way I did. We had a lot of fun drinking, laughing and having an absolute blast like the best party you ever saw. That lasted for several weeks!

But after a while, I noticed a lot of my party friends were back to looking painfully sober again. The cares of this life were zapping them of their joy. I was sorry to see many of them had forgotten all the fun we had.

But I was hooked like a wino. I was not just drinking for the fun of it, although it was fun. I needed it to cope with life. Before the revival came, I had been so dry for so long I was desperately holding onto this stuff. I was so excited to have found something as wonderful and as real and life changing as the heavenly wine.

Once I started drinking, I never stopped. I got up early every day to have another drink. And once I started drinking I didn’t stop until I was good and drunk. Drinking became a lifestyle for me.

People have asked me why I spend so much time with the Lord. To them it might appear to be a waste of time. Just think of what you could be doing with your time. You could be serving your family or your church or getting some work done. At least you could be doing something productive! But what they fail to see is that I am addicted!

After drinking every day for a long time, I got so hooked on this stuff that I ached on the inside from the moment I woke up. It got to the point where I could not possibly face the day sober. My circumstances were too ugly for me to bear. Fears and anxieties were waiting to gobble me up. I had to get drunk to forget about my cares. So I woke up every day with the emptiest feeling inside, an aching hunger that compelled me to get with God. Only one thing could satisfy that aching. I had to have a drink!

So I became addicted to God but I was not alone. I discovered there were many other addicts experiencing the same things as I was. I believe King David was seriously addicted to the presence of God as he describes his situation in Psalm 42.

As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; Psalm 42:1-2

So now I have been doing this every day for nearly 20 years. Yet in all that time, I never knew there were different levels available until just a couple of weeks ago. While I was having my daily time with the Lord, He spoke to me.

It was on a Monday when I was having my prayer time. I kept getting interrupted because I had to go to the bathroom. So it was taking a lot longer than normal to get into the presence of God. Normally I am all done in about 2 hours but this time 2 hours had passed and I was still just getting started. I was not giving up and was determined to break through no matter how long it took. So I lied down on my bed to get started again. Then the Lord said to me, “Starting today you are going to experience a new level of drunkenness and you are going to love it.”

When he said that I was not yet experiencing anything. However, His presence then started manifesting and I became filled with the heaviest, deepest peace I have ever experienced. I have been getting drunk with the peace of God every day for many years but this was much deeper and heavier than anything I had ever had before. After a long time I returned from la-la land so drunk in the spirit I could not move and did not care. I just lied there for about another hour or so, completely drunk. It was like a giant dose of heaven poured into me. It was so strong it stayed on me the rest of the day and surprisingly I still felt it the next day, which is very unusual. It was like deep peace had penetrated to the very core of my heart. In this condition, I had not a care in the world, only wonderful peace and joy. It truly was a new level.

The next day, I was curious to find out if the new level of drunkenness was going to continue. Even before I started my prayer time, I still felt the inner peace lingering from the day before. I could count on one hand the times that had happened before. It was very rare. Normally, I felt only the gnawing emptiness at the start of each day.

When I started my prayer time, the presence of God was immediately manifesting. Within a few minutes I was experiencing the same thing as the day before. After about 2 hours I returned from la-la land but was not able to move for at least another hour. Even then I had to make myself get up. It would have been very easy to stay there for a lot longer. It was pure heaven! The peace seemed even stronger than the day before and stayed strong on me all day.

What an awesome blessing. The amazing thing to me is I don’t know of anything I did to deserve it, other than just being faithful to keep getting into the presence day after day for many years. This was just a gift, an amazing gift and I love it! I am so encouraged that He considered me ready to move to a new level of drunkenness.

Then again the next day the same thing happened. Instead of spending the normal 2 hours it took closer to 5 hours, but I did not care in the least about the time because His presence was so awesome. It was worth it!

So there are different levels of drunkenness available. Just like when Jesus turned the water into wine at the wedding in Cana, the headwaiter told the bridegroom he had saved the best wine for last. There is wine and then there is the really good stuff. Once you’ve tasted the good stuff, it is impossible to be satisfied with anything less.

No matter how much peace you have now, there is more available if you want it. No matter how much heaven you are experiencing on the earth, you can have more. There are higher levels available to all of us here and now if we want them enough to take them.

Peace can fill your heart until it saturates the very core of your being. You can marinate in the Spirit of God until you are so soaked in heavenly peace and joy they will overflow from you to everyone and anyone who comes in your path.

This reminds me of the love affair in the Song of Solomon. I feel like I have experienced the strength of my lover, which has caused me to be undone. He fills me with his wine until I am so intoxicated that I pass out then he watches over me and protects me until I awaken. He keeps me and takes care of everything around me. He speaks to everyone around me so that no one and nothing disturbs me or awakens me from my lovesick condition, from my drunken stupor, until it pleases me to awaken.

“Sustain me with raisin cakes, refresh me with apples, because I am lovesick. Let his left hand be under my head and his right hand embrace me.” (Song of Solomon 2:5-6 NASB)

“I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or by the hinds of the field, that you do not arouse or awaken my love until she pleases.” (Song of Solomon 2:7 NASB)

“Draw me after you and let us run together! The king has brought me into his chambers. We will rejoice in you and be glad; we will extol your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you.” (Song of Solomon 1:4 NASB)

I no longer recall the things that had caused me to worry and to fear because His love and His awesome presence have driven those cares far away from me. He has brought me to a place where I am no longer tormented by those things.

Someone might ask what good is it to soak in the Lord. The ultimate goal is to one day stand before God and give an account for your life having fully completed everything He wanted you to do. However, it is impossible to fulfill His plan without being filled with His Spirit. You cannot do it on your own strength because your strength will fail. Jesus taught us that He is the vine and we are the branches and apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). This is why Paul instructs us to be filled with His Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). The soaking and filling are essential if we want to be effective and useful for service.

The more filled you are with His Spirit the more you will flow in His plan and purpose for your life. You will not have to struggle to find your purpose. You will not have to waste years of your life trying to serve Him in areas He did not design you or plan for you to serve. His plans for your life are very specifically designed for you. When you are filled with Him you will flow with Him right into the very thing He created you to do. Without Him, you will not discover His purpose for you, which makes it impossible for you to complete what He wants you to do. But when you get filled, soaked and saturated in Him, His purpose will arise in you and He will overflow through you into the lives of others around you.

This article is an example of this very point because it shows how getting drunk in the Spirit enables us to be used by God. The very reason you are reading this now is only because I got so filled with Him that these thoughts came to me for the purpose of writing them down for you to read. The more I soak, the more I drink, the more drunk I get, the more these ideas come to me so I can write them. I do not just for write these things in my personal journal where no one else can find them, but God has given these things to me to post publicly where you and others can find them. The soaking is not just about me. God already had you on His mind when He was flowing into me and through me into you.

Soaking and drinking and drunkenness are about more than just making us feel good, although it makes us feel real good. It is ultimately about doing the will of God in the earth, allowing Him to use us as His chosen vessels to minister His love to others.

So drink up and keep on drinking until you get so drunk that His spirit overflows through you to others around you. You will be satisfied and happy to know you are doing the very things He made you to do.
