Mark Blaxill, chief financial officer of the Holland Center, a private autism treatment center and father of an autistic adult daughter, joined \u201cThe Defender In-Depth\u201d this week to discuss what he called the \u201ccoming tsunami\u201d of autism caregiving, as the autistic children of the 1990s onward reach adulthood.<\/em><\/p>\n April is Autism Awareness Month \u2014 or as it\u2019s been rebranded,\u00a0Autism Acceptance Month<\/a>.<\/p>\n Every year this time, public health officials, the media and some autism organizations tell us how\u00a0autism should be celebrated<\/a>\u00a0and embraced \u2014 how it\u2019s a condition more akin to a quirk than a lifelong disability, one for which a growing number of diagnoses is a sign of \u201cinclusivity.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking to \u201cThe Defender In-Depth\u201d this week \u2014 one day after Children\u2019s Health Defense filed a motion in federal court alleging government lawyers\u00a0hid evidence that vaccines can cause autism<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Mark Blaxill, co-author of \u201cDenial: How Refusing to Face the Facts about Our Autism Epidemic Hurts Children, Families, and Our Future<\/a>,\u201d shared a different view.<\/p>\n Blaxill, chief financial officer of the\u00a0Holland Center<\/a>, a private autism treatment center, is the father of an autistic adult daughter. After his daughter\u2019s diagnosis, Blaxill began studying the causes of autism. His research led him to publish \u201cDenial\u201d and several scientific papers on autism.<\/p>\n Blaxill criticized attempts to normalize autism and claims that increases in autism diagnoses are simply due to improvements in detection.<\/p>\n He said public health agencies have repeatedly lied about the causes of autism,\u00a0and he warned of a\u00a0\u201ccoming tsunami\u201d of autism caregiving<\/a>, as the autistic children of the 1990s onward become adults and lose their parents, who are often their caretakers.<\/p>\n According to Blaxill, when he first began researching autism, the consensus rate of the autism prevalence rate was about 1 in 4,000 to 1 in 5,000. He said he observed at the time that \u201cthere was almost no autism in developing nations, that it was pretty much a disease of the developed world.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cToday we\u2019re talking about\u00a01 in 36<\/a>, 1 in 29,\u201d Blaxill said. \u201cThings don\u2019t change that rapidly if they\u2019re not real.<\/p>\n Blaxill conceded there are children with autism who never received a vaccine, whose diagnoses were likely due to environmental factors, including\u00a0exposure to pesticides<\/a>\u00a0and other\u00a0chemicals<\/a>.<\/p>\n But, he said \u2014 quoting autism researcher and author Bernard Rimland \u2014 \u201cThe autism epidemic is real and overvaccination is its cause.\u201d<\/p>\n There was a \u201csharp inflection point in 1990\u201d after which autism rates exploded, Blaxill said. The most obvious change that affected children \u201cacross the country at a very clear point in time was the change in the childhood immunization practices.\u201d<\/p>\n In 1986, Congress passed the\u00a0National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act<\/a>. Blaxill said, \u201cShortly thereafter, two new vaccines, very high technology vaccines, the\u00a0hepatitis B vaccine<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Haemophilus influenzae Type B vaccine<\/a>\u00a0were introduced. Those two vaccines used\u00a0thimerosal<\/a>\u00a0[an organomercury compound] as a preservative.\u201d<\/p>\n Blaxill refuted commonly heard claims that autism rates are increasing because methods of diagnosing the condition have improved.<\/p>\n According to Blaxill, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has, since the birth year of 1992, performed an annual autism prevalence survey. The agency used the same methodology every year to perform the survey.<\/p>\n Blaxill said there are three arguments people use to deny \u201cthe reality of an autism epidemic\u201d and explain rising autism cases.<\/p>\n According to the \u201cdiagnostic substitution\u201d method, children who used to be classified as having an intellectual disability are now being diagnosed with autism.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s just wrong \u2014 the data don\u2019t support that,\u201d Blaxill said. \u201cIntellectual disability rates have stayed pretty constant and autism rates have exploded.\u201d<\/p>\n Another argument, \u201cdiagnostic expansion,\u201d claims that criteria for diagnosing autism were broadened by adding conditions such as\u00a0Asperger\u2019s syndrome<\/a>\u00a0to the classification. But even controlling for this, autism rates \u201care exploding,\u201d Blaxill said.<\/p>\n The third argument, \u201cdiagnostic oversight,\u201d holds that autism was always prevalent but went undiagnosed. Blaxill said this argument is \u201cmore elusive to refute, but it\u2019s also catastrophically wrong. It\u2019s sloppy, lazy, doesn\u2019t look at historical evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBefore 1930, the rate of autism in the world was effectively zero,\u201d Blaxill said.<\/p>\n Based on estimates that 100 billion humans have been born since the beginning of time, Blaxill explained that at current levels of diagnosis, this would mean 3.5 billion autistic humans have existed throughout time whose symptoms implausibly went unnoticed.<\/p>\n \u201cThere were people writing about childhood development, childhood psychiatry back into the 19th century, and there is not a whisper of autism,\u201d Blaxill said.<\/p>\n Autism isn\u2019t going undiagnosed, according to Blaxill. He alleged, instead, that the data on the causes of autism are being covered up \u2014 by government health authorities.<\/p>\n Blaxill said he is \u201cprofoundly disillusioned by the corruption that allows industries to \u201ccapture\u201d the government agencies that are supposed to regulate them.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Department of Health and Human Services is captured by the medical industry, so it only supports narratives that its customers \u2026 want to advance.\u201d<\/p>\n Blaxill said government agencies have a financial interest in the success of medicines in general and vaccinations in particular. \u201cThe CDC approves and recommends vaccinations,\u201d he said. \u201cThe CDC, over time, has done their best to cover up this epidemic \u2026 the agency learned how to lie with autism, and they\u2019ve lied at every turn.\u201d<\/p>\n He cited the CDC\u2019s manipulation of autism prevalence rates and refusal to study the entire\u00a0childhood vaccination schedule<\/a>\u00a0in connection with autism, even though \u201cit is most likely the biggest culprit.\u201d<\/p>\n He said:<\/p>\n \u201cEverybody in the medical field looks at illness and sickness as an opportunity to make money. Whether you\u2019re in government, you can get more funds, you can get more budgets, you can get promotions, you can have a career, whether you\u2019re in\u00a0Pharma<\/a>, you can get a blockbuster new drug or a blockbuster new vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n Blaxill criticized attempts to normalize and celebrate autism.<\/p>\n Noting that the CDC stopped referring to autism as an urgent public health concern, Blaxill said Most of what the agency talks about now is, \u201cOh, let\u2019s celebrate the fact that Black and Hispanic rates of autism are catching up to the white rates of autism, and we\u2019re doing as good a job discovering autism in Black and Hispanic children.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Blaxill said that while he wants to celebrate his autistic daughter, he doesn\u2019t want \u201cto celebrate her disability or what happened to her because when I\u2019m gone and when her mother is gone, there will be no one for her.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy daughter\u2019s disabled for life. Don\u2019t cheapen that disability by pretending that the fact that you\u2019re a little nerdy makes you autistic. No, it\u2019s not,\u201d Blaxill said.<\/p>\n Blaxill co-authored a peer-reviewed paper warning of an upcoming \u201cautism tsunami<\/a>\u201d as autistic children born in the 1990s and 2000s reach adulthood. The paper, published in 2022 in a\u00a0Springer journal<\/a>, was\u00a0retracted<\/a>\u00a0and subsequently\u00a0published in another journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThose numbers are going to keep going up. \u2026 Over time, therefore, we\u2019re going to see a cost of disease evolution that\u2019s dramatic and very concerning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Early in life, autism is very costly to parents, including mothers who often are obliged to stay home and abandon their careers. \u201cOver time, those costs shift,\u201d he said, as \u201cthe parents retire, the parents die.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMost autistic individuals in adulthood are unemployed and unemployable \u2026 Then they\u2019re going to have to be housed somewhere and they\u2019re going to have to have something to do during the day. Someone\u2019s got to watch over them,\u201d Blaxill said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe cost per individual is always large \u2026 anywhere between $20,000-$100,000 [per year],\u201d Blaxill said. \u201cIf you take that cost per individual and you change the whole population distribution of those individuals over time from 2025 to 2030 to 2040 to 2060, you see a tsunami of costs that has no end.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe infrastructure, the social services, the educational services to service this population is going to be incredibly strained in the decades ahead. It\u2019s going to cost, on a national basis, trillions of dollars annually to serve this population,\u201d Blaxill said.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know where the money\u2019s going to come from. I don\u2019t know where the infrastructure is going to be built.
