The wife of a Florida doctor who died 15 days after receiving\u00a0Pfizer\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>\u00a0told reporters at\u00a0USA Today<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0that her husband was \u201cperfectly healthy\u201d before he got the vaccine.<\/p>\n Heidi Neckelmann said her husband, 56-year-old Dr. Gregory Michael, \u201csought emergency care three days after the shot because he had dots on his skin that indicated internal bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n Michael received the vaccine on Dec. 18 at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, where he\u2019d worked for 12 years as an OB-GYN. He died on Jan. 3 after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke related to a lack of platelets, a condition\u00a0called thrombocytopenia<\/a>, or as the Daily Mail reported, acute\u00a0idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura<\/a>\u00a0(ITP).<\/p>\n Neckelmann told the Daily Mail:<\/p>\n \u201cHe was in very good health. He didn\u2019t smoke, he drank alcohol once in a while but only socially. He worked out, we had kayaks, he was a deep sea fisherman.<\/p>\n \u201cThey tested him for everything you can imagine afterwards, even cancer, and there was absolutely nothing else wrong with him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Pfizer, in a statement to USA today, said the vaccine maker was aware of and \u201cactively investigating\u201d the death, but also added \u201cwe don\u2019t believe at this time that there is any direct connection to the vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n Pfizer also told USA Today:<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no indication \u2014 either from large\u00a0clinical trials<\/a>\u00a0or among people who have received the vaccine since the government authorized its use last month \u2013 that it could be connected to thrombocytopenia.\u201d<\/p>\n But Neckelmann told the Daily Mail that in her mind, her husband\u2019s death was \u201c100% linked\u201d to the vaccine.<\/p>\n Children\u2019s Health Defense<\/a>\u00a0(CHD) President\u00a0Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN<\/a>, said ITP is a\u00a0well-known adverse event\u00a0<\/a>associated with vaccinations.<\/p>\n The vaccine most often implicated is the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, where the disease occurs in approximately\u00a01 in every 25,000 to 40<\/a>,000 doses of the vaccine, Redwood said.\u00a0ITP has also been associated with\u00a0hepatitis A and B virus (HBV<\/a>),\u00a0human papilloma virus (HPV)<\/a>,\u00a0varicella-zoster, diphteria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTap)<\/a>,\u00a0polio and pneumococcus vaccines<\/a>.<\/p>\n According to Redwood, a\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0comparing adverse effects following influenza vaccination found that ITP was the third most common autoimmune condition (after Guillain Barre and rheumatoid arthritis).<\/p>\n Redwood also pointed out that\u00a0ITP has been reported to occur\u00a0<\/a>following exposure to drugs containing\u00a0polyethylene glycol (PEG)<\/a>, a compound used in both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.<\/p>\n \u201cConsidering that according to the\u00a0United States Court of Federal Claims<\/a>, cases of ITP have been compensated in the\u00a0National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program<\/a>\u00a0(NVICP), it\u00a0is completely disingenuous for vaccine manufacturers to deny this risk,\u201d Redwood said.<\/p>\n As Neckelmann told the Daily Mail, Michael suffered no immediate reaction to the vaccine, but three days later he noticed petechiae \u2014 spots of red indicative of bleeding beneath the skin \u2014 on his hands and feet.<\/p>\n After checking himself into the hospital, doctors confirmed Michael was suffering from an acute lack of platelets. According to Neckelmann :<\/p>\n \u201cAll the blood results came back normal except for the platelets which came back as zero.<\/p>\n \u201cAt first they thought it must be a mistake. So they did the test again and this time did a manual count which is supposed to be more accurate. This time it showed just one platelet.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Doctors told Michael his condition was \u201cincredibly dangerous\u201d and could lead to a brain bleed and\/or death, Neckelmann said.<\/p>\n Neckelmann told USA Today that a team of doctors tried unsuccessfully for two weeks to raise his platelet count. She told the Daily Mail that her husband had no prior history of acute idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, the illness her husband was diagnosed with. The disorder causes the immune system to mistake platelets for foreign objects and instructs the spleen to destroy them.<\/p>\n In a\u00a0Facebook post<\/a>, Neckelmann wrote that her husband was a pro-vaccine advocate. But, she said:<\/p>\n \u201cI believe that people should be aware that side effects can happen, that it is not good for everyone and in this case destroyed a beautiful life, a perfect family, and has affected so many people in the community<\/p>\n \u201cDo not let his death be in vain please save more lives by making this information news.\u201d<\/p>\n According to the Daily Mail, children can get acute ITP after a viral infection such as the flu or mumps, while in adults, triggers can include\u00a0HIV<\/a>, hepatitis or H. pylori, a type of bacteria that causes stomach ulcers.<\/p>\n On hearing of Michael\u2019s death, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., CHD chairman and chief legal counsel said:<\/p>\n \u201cWe need to stop regarding these tragedies as acceptable collateral damage. We need to step back from this giddy exuberance and make a cold hard risk assessment about these experimental medical interventions. And we need to recognize that these zero-liability vaccines are risky and that where there is risk, there has to be choice.\u201d<\/p>\n The Pfizer \u2014 and also the\u00a0Moderna<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 COVID vaccines use\u00a0messenger RNA technology<\/a>\u00a0never before used in vaccines. Both vaccines are\u00a0approved for emergency use<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S., UK and other countries, but neither is yet fully licensed.<\/p>\n So far there is no confirmation of any deaths directly related to either vaccine, though a\u00a041-year-old woman\u00a0<\/a>in Portugal died two days after getting the Pfizer vaccine, and a 75-year-old Israeli man\u00a0reportedly died<\/a>\u00a0of a heart attack two hours after receiving the vaccine.<\/p>\n There are, however, a growing number of reports of severe allergic reactions to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. According to the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/a>, at least 29 people have had severe allergic reactions in the U.S. to date.<\/p>\n In a news conference Wednesday, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases,\u00a0told the media<\/a>:<\/p>\n \u201cThe known and potential benefits of the current COVID-19 vaccines outweigh the known and potential risks of getting Covid-19. That doesn\u2019t mean, however, that we couldn\u2019t see potential serious health events in the future.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n To date, the only explanation offered for the allergic reactions to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines is that they were caused by PEG.<\/p>\n In September, Children\u2019s Health Defense\u00a0warned\u00a0<\/a>the FDA and Dr. Anthony Fauci about the potential for PEG to cause anaphylactic shock, but as\u00a0previously reported<\/a>, neither took action.<\/p>\n
