“LET YOUR SPEECH ALWAYS BE SEASONED WITH SALT (Colossians 4:6).
When I used to read this verse I used to always wonder why the Lord used the word “salt” here, because salt in and of itself seems to have a strange kind of flavor all its own. However when you add it to something else it greatly enhances the flavor of whatever you add it to.
Years ago, when the Lord was adjusting my language and changing the way I talk, He began to speak to me about how much Power and Authority comes from our lips, that often the words we speak can shape and mold our futures as well as the futures of others. We (in the natural) tend not to think to much about the Power that we possess, not only in our confession, but also in our daily conversations.
The Lord tells us in scripture that the tongue is like rudder on a ship that steers the whole boat of our being, or a fire that has the ability to defile an entire person (James 3), but at the same time it has the ability to greatly touch the lives of all those around you with speech that will build them up and not tear them down (Ephesians 4:29).
As a young man, the Lord began to cause me, (through the help of the Holy Spirit), to reel in my speech and the things that I would say, often without thinking. As He started seasoning my speech with salt and enhancing the words that He would have me to speak, a transformation started not only in my own personal life, but in the lives of those around me.
The Word that was being spoken by Him through my lips began to bring to life to those around me instead of bringing destruction to them. Anyone in this earth, through their natural ability, can destroy someone else with their speech, but only someone who’s been touched by the Holy Spirit can speak Life into someone else and declare the Life of God (by Breathing the Breath of the Lord) back into them. We have those Words enhanced by the Holy Spirit as He brings revelation through those Words to the listeners.
This Spiritual Salt is very interesting, it can preserve and enhance the flavor of things, but it also has the capability to destroy things. Very often when salt is applied to the soil, it causes that land to not grow anything sometimes ever again, but when it’s applied to the Words we say from the Lord it becomes a preservative of those Words, not only enhanced by the Holy Spirit, but preserved by Him as well.
So He not only reveals and enhances what the Lord has us say, but also watches over and protects that Word so that it will grow and mature in our lives. So you need to realize that what you say has the ability to build and create futures in people’s lives around you, good or bad, because what you say is either Empowering Gods Kingdom or the opposing one.
So this morning, if you’re struggling with what comes out of your lips, maybe it’s time to ask the Lord to adjust your speech, so that instead of bitter water coming forth from your fountain, people will get the fresh waters of Life and refreshing as you declare His Word over them.
“Out of the same mouth come forth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so. Does a fountain send forth [simultaneously] from the same opening fresh water and bitter?” James 3:10-11
It may take some time but as your speech adjusts, you will begin to see alterations in the people around and in your life as well. SPEAK LIFE THIS MORNING OVER YOURSELF AND EVERYONE ELSE AROUND YOU! Allow the Holy Spirit to adjust your speech and WATCH HIM SEASON YOU WITH HIS SALT!
