On August 28 2014, I dreamed I was alone in a barren desert plain. I had no shelter, but I did have a couple of couches outside under the open sky. The sky became very dark and ominous, far beyond anything I have ever seen in the natural. It was obvious a major storm was about to start, but it was more than a natural storm that would bring bad weather. This was much bigger and far worse. This storm was about to unleash all sorts of evil upon the whole earth.
Dark clouds were swirling around as the whole sky was filled with terrifying dark forces. I was able to see very high up into the sky. Way up high I saw what looked like long thin black banners or strips floating in the air. Whatever these were they just added to the creepy atmosphere. I believe I was seeing beyond the natural realm into the spiritual realm, looking at the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). The powers of hell filled the sky and were engulfing the whole earth.
The scene was very disturbing. I tried to find a photo of an ominous looking sky to illustrate what I saw, but nothing I found was even close to being as terrifying, so you’ll just have to use your imagination. The storm filled the sky from one end to the other. I had the sense that it was not coming in the future, but was already upon us now. There seemed to be no safe place to go to get away from it. It was literally engulfing the whole earth.
My first reaction was to hide on the ground next to my couches as if somehow the couches would protect me. I also had a set of keys, which I hid under the couch to protect them. However, I quickly realized I was not safe staying there so I took off running as fast as I could to get away from there. Then I suddenly found myself standing in front of the little chapel at my old high school, Christ School. My senior year I was in charge of the chapel so it made sense that I had the keys to unlock the front doors. I opened them and entered in. As I did I turned and saw two people walking by in front of the chapel. It was my friend Cynthia and her daughter Amanda. The Lord had used Cynthia in the past to give me many prophetic words. Cynthia walked up the steps to the front door and said to me, “The one who runs at the front of the pack, Jim…” Then I interrupted her to finish her sentence, “is able to see the things that are coming up ahead.” She nodded her head in agreement. That was the end of the dream.
I believe what I saw was similar to what the prophet Isaiah saw:
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. (Isaiah 60:2)
I believe what I saw is the beginning of the fulfillment of what Jesus warned about when he described the signs of the times that would precede His return. I believe we are at the beginning of the season of the Lord’s return. I don’t know how long that season will last, but that is a topic for another post. If you are interested you can read my list of ten things the Bible identifies that must happen before the rapture.
Prior to His return Jesus said the earth would enter into a time of distress (anguish, dismay) among nations. During those days, He said men would faint from fear, terrified by the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken (Luke 21:25-26). That sense of dread is what I experienced when I saw the sky in my dream.
I believe the couches in my dream were there to represent my dwelling place. The absence of any walls or a roof showed how vulnerable I was to the storm. My first reaction was to take refuge there, but I quickly realized that was a mistake because there was nothing there that could protect me.
In the past year, hundreds of thousands of people across the world have already been forced to flee their homes to escape the horrors of this storm. News reports have shown churches converted into refugee camps in countries like Syria, Iraq, and Nigeria. This is similar to how I took refuge in the chapel in my dream. As this storm spreads many more people will be forced to flee from their homes. They will only find protection where I found it, in the house of the Lord. This does not mean a literal church building. Entering the house of the Lord refers to the place of protection that comes from walking closely with the Lord in covenant with Him.
This great storm is already upon us and we are seeing it beginning to manifest in various places.
- Extreme violence and great persecution of Christians have engulfed countries like Nigeria, Syria, and Iraq.
- Civil wars are now raging in Libya, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.
- War has been raging in Israel this summer against Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Now Israel is facing more trouble on their northern border as Al Qaeda forces have taken control of southern Syria.
- Violent uprisings have recently occurred in Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, and Mozambique.
- Violent drug wars have turned Mexico into a failed state, unable to maintain law and order in their own nation. There have been thousands of casualties and entire cities are paralyzed with fear.
- A highly contagious Ebola virus has already killed hundreds of people in Africa. There is a great risk of it spreading throughout the world.
- Record numbers of illegal immigrants are now crossing the southern border of the United States as our federal government refuses to enforce our immigration laws.
- In Europe anti-Semitism and persecution of Christians has increased dramatically this year. Islamic groups are taking control of neighborhoods in the UK.
- Throughout the world sovereign debt levels have soared to unprecedented high levels putting the entire world financial system in great danger.
According to the Bible, these things are only the beginning of the sorrows that are coming prior to the Lord’s return. Although there has always been trouble in the world, Jesus warned us that before He returns the earth would experience greater trouble than ever before. He told us this time of trouble would be a sign, letting us know we are in the season of His return. He said it would come upon the earth like birth pangs (Matthew 24:8) with intense trouble followed by a break in the action followed by more intense trouble. So that is what we can expect to see in the days to come.
Jesus said when we hear of wars and disturbances, we should not be terrified because these things must take place before He returns, but the end does not follow immediately (Luke 21:9). Many more events are still ahead of us (Luke 21:10-19) including the following:
- Persecution of believers will increase throughout the world. Many will be put in prison, betrayed even by members of their own family.
- There will be wars and rumors of wars. Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.
- There will be great earthquakes.
- In various places there will be plagues, famines, terrors, and great signs from heaven.
- Among believers there is coming a great falling away from the faith.
Despite all of the events already happening and the events still coming, many American Christians appear to be in a deep sleep, believing trouble cannot come to America. Just because we have enjoyed many years of peace and safety does not mean trouble cannot come here. This storm is coming upon the whole world and America will not be immune from it.
When it comes it will do exactly what the Bible says it will do. It will bring distress, anguish, and dismay among the nations. It will cause men to faint for fear, terrified by what they see coming upon the world. Fear is going to grip the earth. Panic, chaos, and confusion will be the order of the day. The only safe place to take refuge from the storm will be in the house of the Lord, in the presence of God, under the covering of His mighty angels.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run into it and are safe (Proverbs 18:10).
So it is time for all believers to heed the warnings and prepare for what is coming. It is time for our young people to put away their X-Boxes and turn off their movies to seek the Lord and build up their faith. It is time for our pastors to put away their man-made programs, their seeker-sensitive strategies, and their politically correct sermons. It is time for our teachers to put stop spreading false doctrines, like telling us we are all going to be caught away in the rapture before anything bad happens. It is time for all believers to repent from their sins and draw closer to God than ever before.
When the storm hits, those who do not know the Lord will be in great danger because they won’t know how to fight against the spirit of fear that will be seeking to torment and devour them. Those who are weak in faith will find it difficult to stand firm, to keep their peace, or to be led by the spirit to the place of safety because they did not practice these things when they had the chance. Those who believed false doctrines will have to fight for their lives to hold onto their faith because nothing happened the way they were told. Many will even abandon their faith. The Apostle Paul warned there will be a great falling away from the faith before the rapture, which is the coming apostasy (2nd Thessalonians 2:3).
On the other hand, those who seek the Lord with all of their heart will find Him. Those who stay close to Him will be allowed to see things before they happen. Like the message I heard in my dream, the ones who run at the front of the pack are the ones who are able to see the things that are coming up ahead. That makes sense in the natural realm, but it is also true in the spiritual realm. Many of God’s people are now receiving warnings of what is coming. This is the heritage of those who know the Lord. Unlike the world, God’s people will never be caught off guard, but will be warned well in advance of things to come.
Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets. (Amos 3:7).
Here is another example of how God warns His people. Dr. James Maloney, President of The ACTS Group International, wrote the following ominous warning about the spiritual darkness that is coming upon the world, but also the coming glory of God.
Twenty-five years ago I believe the Lord told me that starting in 2015 this darkness of Isaiah 60 would begin to increase exponentially across the globe, but that we as the remnant were to arise and shine because the glory of the Lord was risen upon us. This darkness isn’t comprised solely of arrant sin, but of a spirit of antichrist.
So if Dr. Maloney heard correctly, and I believe he did, the storm that I saw will intensify and bring about an exponential increase in spiritual darkness across the globe. At the same time, as Isaiah wrote “the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you” (Isaiah 60:2).
So despite all of these things, we can keep our peace and keep fear far removed from us. Even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we do not need to fear any evil because He is with us (Psalm 23:4). Even if all of hell is unleashed in the earth, God is greater than any foe and mighty to keep us no matter what comes our way. Jesus told us that while we are in this world we will have trouble, but even so he told us, “Be of good cheer because I have overcome the world.” Seek the Lord today and build up your faith by studying His word. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Learn more about how the Lord can be your shelter from the storm.
