Very early in my walk with Jesus, I asked Him for the gift of discernment. The Lord answered my prayer, but just not in the way I expected. What He did was to put many false prophets, teachers, and Christians in my path, so that I could practice my discernment.
This testimony is about a time when I was deceived by a self-proclaimed “scribe of the Lord”, who was operating under the influence of a familiar spirit. Taryn B (not her real name) regularly published “dreams from the Lord”, which were beautifully written and copiously sprinkled with scripture. When I first started reading her dreams, I thought for sure she was the real deal.
One day I went to subscribe to her private forum. But before I could enter the restricted area, I had to agree that the rapture was pre-trib. Now that was odd. Why would that be a precondition for entry?
The next thing that gave me pause was one particular dream she had. She said that in her dream she received instructions from God via a text message from her dead relative. Wait…what? So would the living God really use the dead to convey messages to the living?
According to Leviticus 19:30 “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.” So we are to have nothing to do with mediums, ghosts, persons who invoke the dead or any communication with the dead. Doing so is anathema to God.
The main reason to not read prophecies where the prophet has a familiar spirit is because that prophecy is not from God, but from demons. Some recent examples that come to mind are where a “prophet” said “I had a vision where my dead mother spoke to me and said _____”. Or “my son, who was killed last year, came to me in a dream and told me _____”. Or “my friend, who died in 1990, warned me in a dream that _____”. I could go on and on, but I’m sure you get the picture.
And have you noticed in recent years the explosion of TV characters talking to other TV characters that died in a prior episode? In other words – ghosts. Not just on TV, but in the movies too. Do you remember the movie “The 6th Sense” about the little boy who said he saw dead people? And the twist at the end where it was revealed that the boy’s psychiatrist was actually dead the whole time? Whoa! I remember loving that show when it first came out, oblivious to the dangerous undertones. This was back when I was unsaved and asleep.
Another insidious trend on TV is where the main characters have a séance. Isn’t it interesting how TV characters love to reach out to the dead to help them in times of trouble instead of reaching out to the most High God, who is very much alive? Could it be that the people who write this stuff serve a different god, namely satan? And they want you to come into agreement with the evil one’s agenda by watching his programs. Ever wonder why the shows are called programs? Could it be that we are being “programmed” and brainwashed to accept evil as good?
Out of curiosity I googled “TV shows about mediums” and got over 25 hits! Everything from “Long Island Medium” to “Psychic Kids” to “Psychic Investigators” to “Rescue Mediums” to “Cell Block Psychic” to “Mom’s a Medium” to “Ghost Whisperer” to name just a few.
I know someone who lost two family members in a very short time period. When I would talk to her, I could hear the pain and grief in her voice. One day she told me that she sometimes talked to her dead relatives while she did her daily chores, and that it somehow comforted her. I explained to her how God feels about that and even gave her bible scriptures, but she assured me that it was harmless and perfectly normal. And yes, it may seem normal because we have been programmed by the media for it to seem normal, but God does not see it that way. And it is not harmless because it opens the door for the enemy to attack.
Okay, so here is the 64 million dollar question. If you detect a familiar spirit, what should you do about it? If you suspect the person whose prophecy you just read has a familiar spirit, you need to stop reading that prophecy and say “I reject that prophecy in the name of Jesus. I do NOT receive the lies of the enemy”.
But what if you suspect that you have a familiar spirit? Maybe you had a dream where a dead relative was talking to you? Or maybe you lost a loved one and have been talking to that person?
You need to use the spiritual authority granted to you in LUKE 10:19 and MATTHEW 16:19 to bind that spirit in Jesus name. You could say something like “I BIND the familiar spirit attacking me in Jesus Name. I forbid it from operating in me and command it to depart at once. I break off all assignments by the enemy and declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I thank you Father for delivering me from that familiar spirit in Jesus name. Amen.”
And you may need to do this multiple times a day until it goes away. And when you do this, say it like you mean it! The enemy needs to know you mean business. One caveat though – before engaging in any type of spiritual warfare, be sure to plead the blood of Jesus over yourself first, so that you are protected.
Scriptures
ISAIAH 8:19 And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?
LEVITICUS 19:31 ‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.
LEVITICUS 20:6 ‘As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the harlot after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people. 7‘You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. 8‘You shall keep My statutes and practice them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
1 SAMUEL 28:7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.”
1 CHRONICLES 10:13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. 14But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
LUKE 16:24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ 27“Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”
REVELATION 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
2 CORINTHIANS 6:17 Therefore come out from among them, and be you separate, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18And will be a Father unto you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
LUKE 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
MATTHEW 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The Lord began drawing Dana to Him about six months before she was saved. By January of 2015, the urgency to make a decision about God was so strong, that it was all she could think about, but she was clueless how to even get saved. One day in her bedroom, she cried out to God telling him she really wanted to be saved, but she didn’t know how. Then she had the thought, maybe she could Google it. And that’s what she did. She found instructions on the Internet and said the Salvation prayer out loud.
In 2017 the Lord led her 600 miles away from her family, friends and home to a place she had never been and did not want to go – Missouri. Then in April of 2019 the Lord gave her a vision of a woman sitting at a desk, writing on paper. That’s when she knew He wanted her to write, but what on earth could she possibly write about? Then in July of 2020 the Lord gave her a vision of an eyebrow pencil outlining a woman’s eye. She interpreted that to mean “I OUTLINE”. And that is exactly what He did. And that’s how the Lord got her to pick up her pen.

Hello,
I 100% agree about not seeking mediums, psychics, tarot, watching shows like along Island Mediums. As someone with the mantle of chain breaking myself, I appreciate your zeal for freedom. However, I don’t see in the scripture you are citing a case for someone dreaming about a passed on relative is sinful or partnering with a familiar spirit. It would be partnering with a familiar spirit, if she was saying this took place while awake and conscious and then a dead relative appeared to her, that would clearly violate scripture. It sounds to me more like this might be a case of looking for a spirit under every rock.
Side note, was it a familiar spirit when Moses and Elijah appeared next to Jesus in the transfiguration after already having “died”? (the point being they were alive in Christ, though departed from the earth). No. The point is sometimes God speaks in ways we don’t expect.
Since that’s your conviction, go for it, I’m not here to convince you otherwise, but I don’t think any of those scriptures refer to dreams but active, awake in life choices. I should clarify, it could be dream by dream basis, as some dreams can be sinful, and there can be things to bind. But seriously, one dream saying they got a text message from a passed on relative from God…huge stretch, and I don’t think you’ve got that in scripture.
We can agree to disagree. God bless.
Its soooo obvious who you are referring to. You should remove this based on the comment about Jesus speaking to Moses on the mount of transfiguration. Someone passing along something they saw in a dream is a far cry from consulting the dead in real time. You should reevaluate your position. If that “self proclaimed scribe” as you put it is really hearing from God then the one who loses out is you. What a shame. Seriously…. this is the christian. version of a Karen…. policing people that dont need it…. Sigh.. If she is right and you are not and you have gone public in this way and deterred others from hearing the message of God and being encouraged in dark times….how will you justify that when you stand before Him.? Be careful lest you discover the ice below you is thin
Seriously if you would like to write an intellectual, researched article about the dangers of consulting mediums then you by all means should. But judging someone based on very limited understanding is quite another matter. She is very well known now…too well known for you to call this out and for it not to be viewed poorly by your readers. It looks like jealousy even if that isnt the case. Please reconsider leaving this public.
Hi Dana – was it primarily these 2 things that were red flags to you? 1) pretrib rapture agreement to become a member on her forum 2) that she had a dream where in the dream, God texted her from a dead relative Regarding 1, I think the reason could be that when running an internet forum there are a lot of different people that can end up there and if they are contentious about arguing whether the pretrib rapture is biblical or not can cause a lot of flame threads that may not be the point of the forum. It is possible she just didnt want to deal with all the moderation needed for that controversial topic…hence the litmus test to register. Regarding 2, Again I agree, it’s very strange. There is a difference between someone actually thinking they are getting a message from God from dead relatives like you mentioned. In a dream, though, it’s a little different but still something to be wary of. I have to say, I have had some very strange dreams. Things I didnt necessarily ask to dream. I wouldn’t let the fact I had a strange dream cause me to do something ungodly or take me away from the living God. When something that is not God tries to whisper to us or influence us or tempt us…we cant stop that from initially happening to us but we absolutely can choose to reject it and take it before God With so many people having dreams, visions, prophecies, etc you are absolutley right that discernemnt is critical. Often I have noticed that modern words, dreams, visions, prophecies have nuggets of truth but then there are elements that may come from the persons own bias or dogma or perspective or interpretation or maturity level… Read more »
Yes Mem. That passage is a great one. It speaks to the importance of obeying God and not man.
Great advice here Dana!
