This testimony is how I was led astray when I did not seek the Lord first about a new person who came into my life. Because I failed to do that, it left the door open for a spirit of witchcraft to come against not only me, but my precious cat. I made the exact same mistake that Joshua made with the Gibeonites – trusting a stranger without first seeking the counsel of the Lord.
That person was Jerry (not his real name), a homeless man, who I met in early 2019. Now the thing about Jerry was that if I had not met him panhandling, I would never have known he was homeless. He was articulate, polite, well-groomed, and ever so charming with a heavy Southern drawl. When I first met him, he and his girlfriend and dog were living in a storage unit. Over the next few months, I noticed him panhandling near Walmart and we struck up a friendship. Then he disappeared for a while and reappeared in November.
To my surprise, he didn’t seem like the same person. He looked haggard, unkempt and his clothes were filthy. He told me that he and his family had moved into a studio apartment over the summer. Then one night, two other tenants in the same building came to his door and physically attacked him over a misunderstanding. Jerry, although smaller than the two assailants, nevertheless prevailed over them using his martial arts expertise. The attackers suffered injuries, but Jerry escaped unscathed. But when the police showed up, Jerry was arrested and jailed. During the trial, the judge dismissed all charges against him based on exonerating video evidence. When he got out of jail, he discovered that he had lost his apartment, most of his possessions, his girlfriend, and his dog. I could tell he was in terrible emotional pain over his loss, and I was practically in tears at the end of his story. I gave him my number and told him to call me if he ever needed help.
On Thanksgiving Day, I got a frantic call from Jerry. He told me he was living in the woods and his tent had collapsed from the heavy storm the night before. Everything he had was soaking wet, the tent was flooded, and it was freezing cold outside. So I went to Lowe’s to get him some tent adhesive to patch the seams, some tarps to cover his tent, and Para cord to secure the tarp. I also brought him a dry change of clothes, hot coffee and a blanket. Then we took all his wet stuff to the laundry to be washed and dried. By the end of the day, his tent was dry and livable once more.
Afterwards he sent me a text saying that God had sent me to him when he needed help the most. And would I help him to know God? I nearly broke down in tears when I got that text. So we began meeting regularly either at church or at McDonalds, to talk about God. He told me he had had a problem with drugs and alcohol, but he hadn’t done drugs in four months. He did still drink on occasion, but he didn’t think he was an alcoholic.
One day when the temperature dropped below freezing, I asked him if he wanted an extra sleeping bag I had. He said yes. Later I swung by Walmart to give him the bag, but suddenly he seemed reluctant to take it. I insisted he take it. When he finally showed up, I smelled alcohol on his breath and knew he had been drinking. So that was the reason for his sudden reluctance to come get the bag.
On 12/7/2019 I had a dream of a 12 year old boy, who was wore glasses and a scarf around his neck. He came and stood near me. Then he asked me for a tissue. Then he sneezed. Then his Mom called him. End of dream. The next time I met Jerry, he was wearing a Christmas scarf around his neck. I wondered fleetingly if the Lord was telling me that Jerry was the boy in the dream. Was He saying Jerry that was sick?
One day I gave Jerry a solar lantern, thinking he could hang it in his tent so he could read the Bible at night. He seemed to really like that idea. That night he texted me some questions from the book of Matthew, so I knew he was reading his Bible in the tent. A few minutes later he called me and said that the Bible was a lie and God doesn’t really exist and I was of the Devil. What? I was so shocked that I didn’t even know what to say to him. I think I said we could talk in the morning. A little later he texted me “When I am by myself and learn about God, evil comes in my body. I’m scared! I cannot fight that away!” Whoa!
The next day I questioned him some more about what happened and he said he wasn’t really sure but he remembered seeing demons coming at him! He said he saw demons burning the Bible! And he said he was too scared to read it by himself when he was alone in the woods.
I told him that we were in a spiritual battle of good versus evil. And that the thing he saw last night was an evil spirit or demon. And if it happened again, he needed to call on the name of Jesus. That night in a vision I saw an arrow being shot at the keyhole of a door. I wasn’t exactly sure what that vision meant. Was the Lord telling me to do spiritual warfare on Jerry’s behalf? Or was He warning me?
Now while all this was going on, I started to come under heavy spiritual attack. I could still hear from the Lord, but I started having a hard time understanding what He was saying to me. It was almost like a heavy mental fog of confusion had descended upon me. That should have been my clue that witchcraft was coming against me, since God is not the author of confusion. But I was clueless at the time because of the mental fog.
During this same time period, I started having many dreams and visions from the Lord. On 12/4/2019 in a vision I saw myself reaching into my purse and felt a rat! Then on 12/9/2019 I saw a dog smelling another dog’s hind quarters. Then the first dog barked. Then on 12/17/2019 in another vision, I saw an animal covered up with a towel with only its tail exposed. The tail looked like a rat tail. End of visions. In retrospect it all seems obvious that the Lord was trying to warn me, but while I was going through it, the mental fog had me very confused.
Not only did the spirit of witchcraft come against me, but it also attacked my precious cat. One day as I was watching her, her back legs suddenly collapsed beneath her in a splayed position. It almost looked like her right leg was being pulled to the right and her left leg was being pulled to the left by invisible hands. It was truly the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. She stood up and it happened again – her back legs splayed out beneath her! In a total panic, I picked her up and took her to the bathroom and just held her. She seemed very frightened and hid her face in the crook of my arm and trembled. I started calling out to Jesus to help my cat. After a while, I called the vet and she said bring her in immediately.
When we arrived at the vet, I opened the carrier door and my cat strolled out walking normally. After a battery of diagnostic tests and $450 later, the vet concluded that my 18 year old cat was actually pretty healthy! At that point, I was convinced it was a case of spiritual attack by the enemy. But why were we suddenly being attacked?
One day Jerry and I were at church having a bible study, when he suddenly announced that he wanted to me to take him to a nearby town 40 miles away for a job interview. Initially, I said yes. Then after mulling it over some more, I decided I needed to seek the Lord on the request. Well, as soon as I told Jerry what I wanted to do, he set about trying to persuade me to do what he wanted. In fact he sent me upwards of 50 texts and began calling my phone every few minutes to try to persuade me. The tone of the text messages started out nice. But when I did not respond, they became progressively uglier. The final messages were downright threatening. He even invoked satan to slash me and my cat.
Whoa! I was in total shock and decided I needed to cut all ties with him. I told him to not contact me anymore, and things quieted down for maybe a day. Then the church pastor called me to say that Jerry had started calling and harassing him to intercede with me on Jerry’s behalf. So then I had to explain the whole situation to the pastor. When I told him about the threats, he agreed that I should cut all ties with Jerry.
A few days later Jerry tried a different tactic. He sent me a text with a bible question. At first I was going to ignore him, but he was asking me a bible question. How could I not respond to that? So I did. Before long he was asking me for a ride again. Finally, I told him I would get him a bus ticket. Then he asked me for money. I told him I could give him $50. He said that wasn’t enough. I said that was all I could spare. When I went to drop off the ticket and money, he insisted I come inside the restaurant to talk, and I said no. Later I got a text message calling me a “Yankee b****” and accusing me of deliberately getting the bus ticket for the wrong date. After that, I cut all ties with him once and for all.
Well, I’ve got to say that I learned some valuable lessons from that whole experience. Namely, that I always need to ask the Lord first whenever someone new comes into my life. I am kind of a sucker for a sad story and his circumstances tugged at my heart strings. But instead of jumping right in, I should have gone home and prayed about the whole thing first.
You know I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read that passage “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers and rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places”. But let me just say that there’s a big difference between reading about principalities and powers and actually seeing them in action. Before Jerry, it was hard for me to comprehend that a spirit of witchcraft could actually come against me and my cat. But after experiencing it firsthand, I have a new understanding and appreciation for Ephesians 6.
JOSHUA 9:3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors.
JOSHUA 9:14 Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord. 15So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.
JOSHUA 9:22 Then Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you dwell near us? 23Now therefore, you are cursed, and none of you shall be freed from being slaves—woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
1 CORINTHIANS 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
EPHESIANS 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The Lord began drawing Dana to Him about six months before she was saved. By January of 2015, the urgency to make a decision about God was so strong, that it was all she could think about, but she was clueless how to even get saved. One day in her bedroom, she cried out to God telling him she really wanted to be saved, but she didn’t know how. Then she had the thought, maybe she could Google it. And that’s what she did. She found instructions on the Internet and said the Salvation prayer out loud.
In 2017 the Lord led her 600 miles away from her family, friends and home to a place she had never been and did not want to go – Missouri. Then in April of 2019 the Lord gave her a vision of a woman sitting at a desk, writing on paper. That’s when she knew He wanted her to write, but what on earth could she possibly write about? Then in July of 2020 the Lord gave her a vision of an eyebrow pencil outlining a woman’s eye. She interpreted that to mean “I OUTLINE”. And that is exactly what He did. And that’s how the Lord got her to pick up her pen.
