What It Means to Get Drunk in the Spirit

America is on drugs. We have over 56,000 pharmacies selling all sorts of “happy pills” to help people cope with a never ending list of ailments like manic depressive, bipolar, ADD, anxiety disorders, social phobias, cyclothemia, obsessive-compulsive disorders, autism, eating disorders, and on and on. And that’s just the legal drugs. Illegal drug use is also booming. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 42% of Americans have used marijuana at least once in their lifetime. Another 30% have used other types of illegal drugs.

If all of that wasn’t enough, we are also consuming massive amounts of alcohol. Gallup surveys show 67% of adults drink alcohol. According to the Center for Disease Control, nearly one out of every four men in America (23%) are heavy “binge” drinkers, which means an average of five times each month they consume an average of nine or more drinks per occasion. So more than once a week, these guys are not just drinking, they are getting drunk!

So why are so many people using so many substances? According to the Bible, we were not designed to handle this crazy world we live in. God designed us to live in a paradise environment of perfect peace and harmony. His plan was for us to live in the garden of Eden forever. Eden is a Hebrew word which means pleasure. But Adam and Eve disobeyed God and were driven out of the garden (Genesis 2-3). Since then we have been living in a world filled with trouble, heartache, famine, disease, perversion, violence, death, and every kind of evil. With so much trouble all around, people are desperately consuming substances to help them cope with it all.

We can’t return to the Garden of Eden today but God has not left us without hope. He made a way for us to re-enter the atmosphere of Eden, not physically but spiritually. He has provided heavenly wine for us to drink. You don’t have to buy it at the pharmacy or the liquor store because it is totally free. You don’t have to hide it from the police because it is completely legal. Anyone who is thirsty can drink all they want. The heavenly bar is always open and the happy hour never ends.

Back in 1993, I was in a powerful revival meeting one night when the minister suddenly interrupted the service to announce the Holy Spirit had just told him there were people present in the meeting who were going to experience getting drunk on heavenly wine for the first time.

At that time, I had been a Christian for 11 years but I had never heard anything about drinking the heavenly wine or getting drunk in the Holy Spirit. Despite my best efforts to walk close with God, somewhere along the way my spiritual life had totally dried up. So when these revival meetings came along I was very hungry to receive from God.

Right after he said that, I began to feel drunk as did lots of other people. I felt the same symptoms people normally feel when drunk with wine except this was far better because I did not have to pay for it and there was no hangover in the morning. It was wonderful and I loved it so much I came back for more the next night and the next night and the next night. In fact, it never stopped.

I became a heavenly wino. It was the most wonderful thing I had ever experienced. I was hooked. I rearranged my schedule so I could wake up early everyday to start drinking and I didn’t stop until I was good and drunk. I especially looked forward to the weekends because I could have more time to drink. I rearranged my whole life so I could drink up and stay drunk.

I know this might sound bizarre if you have not experienced it for yourself. So I have written this to help answer some questions about this amazing phenomenon. What does it mean to get drunk in the Spirit? Is it scriptural? What is the difference between getting filled and getting drunk? Can anyone get drunk in the Spirit? Why is it important to get drunk in the Spirit? Finally, how can a person get drunk in the Spirit?

You don’t have to be a victim of all the evil forces arrayed against you. You don’t have to suffer from anxiety or fear or mental disorders or anything else. You can’t stop all the trouble in the world but you can overcome it. You can rise above it. You can have heaven on the inside of you right now, right here in this life. Once you drink this wine, you will never again need any pills or illegal drugs or alcohol.

My hope is that everyone would discover this amazing gift and begin to experience the wonderful peace of heaven. It makes me sad to see people who I love consuming substances as they are seeking peace but not finding it. What I have found is available to anyone who wants it. I hope you will read about it for yourself in the Bible so you know it is real and not just something I am making up. Then you can start drinking for yourself!

To understand what it means to get drunk in the Spirit, we have to put into context because it is not of this world. It comes from another dimension, another realm, so first we have to identify that realm.

We all know the natural realm because it is where we live everyday. It is the realm of everything we see and hear and touch. It includes the whole earth, the sun, the moon, the other stars and planets. But according to the Bible, there is another realm, which is the invisible realm of the Spirit. Millions of people assume the spiritual realm is not real because it is invisible, but it is just as real, even more real than the natural realm.

The natural realm is limited by time. Everything in this realm has a beginning and an ending. People disagree on how the universe began, but everyone agrees it has a beginning. There is also disagreement over how the universe will end, but everyone agrees it will end. Even scientists acknowledge our sun and our planet are not going to last forever. They measure the rates of decay and changing elements to estimate how many years we have left before the sun burns out or the earth’s resources are exhausted.

The spiritual realm is completely different because it has no beginning or ending. It exists in a totally different dimension, beyond the realm of time. It is the realm of eternity. It is the realm of the one true and living God who has no beginning and no ending. Our natural minds cannot grasp eternity, but that is okay. It is still just as real whether or not we can grasp it or not.

The natural realm is limited by space. Each of us can only be in one place at a time. If we want to move from one space to another we have to move through every space that exists between here and there. The spiritual realm is not limited by space. Spirit beings are able to pass through walls and move across great distances instantly. After Jesus was raised from the dead, he received a new kind of body which allowed him to enter into the room where the disciples were gathered even though all the doors were shut.

So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. (John 20:19-20)

So here we are living in the natural realm with only a dim sense that any other realm even exists. Not only that, even if we believe there is another realm, our natural minds can never fully comprehend it because it goes so far beyond our ability to comprehend. Yet the spiritual realm is real and is exerting powerful influence over the natural realm.

On the surface, this natural realm appears to be a happening place. Who needs the spiritual realm? We have everything we need here plus the bright lights of Las Vegas and all the beautiful celebrities in Hollywood. What more could anyone want? This is truly where the action is!

But things are not always what they appear to be. According to the Bible, there would be no life or power to do anything in this realm unless it was given to us from the spiritual realm. The Bible says the natural realm was created by God, who is a living Spirit (Genesis 1:1). So if the natural realm came from the spiritual realm and if the natural realm is temporal while the spiritual realm is eternal, then it is safe to say the spiritual realm is ultimately the true reality, even more real than the natural realm.

Not only did the natural realm originate from the spiritual realm, but still today there are great forces currently operating in the spiritual realm which continue to have tremendous impact on what is happening here. We are all feeling the impact of a war that began in the spiritual realm long before the natural realm was created. There was a rebellion against God, which was led by Lucifer. One third of the angels followed Lucifer in his attempt to make himself God. Today, Lucifer, who is now called Satan, along with his fallen angels, who are called demons, have been forced out of the third heaven, which is the highest heaven, the realm of God. Satan and his cohorts have established their thrones in the mid-heaven, which is between the third heaven and the heavens that we see here.

In addition to being kicked out of the third heaven, Satan and his hosts of demons are now doomed because God has already made plans for them to spend eternity in a lake of fire. They have only a short time before that happens. Today, Satan is desperately trying to thwart the plans of God and stop them from coming to pass. In the process, Satan is attacking every human on earth, trying to convince as many people as possible to follow him in his rebellion against God. Those who follow him will suffer the same eternal doom that he faces.

The scheme of the devil is to deceive people so they do not believe anything they hear coming from the one true God. He has no problem with anyone believing in false Gods and false religions. The world is filled with those and the spirit of this world fully embraces them. But when it comes to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the devil seeks to discredit anyone who stands with Him or speaks for Him. The Bible calls Satan the god of this world and says he has blinded the minds of the unbelieving to keep them in darkness.

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Corinthians 4:3-4)

There is much more to this story than what can be told here. The point is every living soul on earth is feeling the impact of the schemes of the evil one in his battle against the kingdom of God and against the souls of men. Whether we believe any of this or not does not stop the devil from waging war against us. Nobody can opt out. Everyone participates in it, believers and unbelievers. Our unbelief does not stop the war, it only makes us easy prey and useful pawns for the dark side.

The spiritual realm is not only real, it also defines who you are. It is impossible to even know your true identity without recognizing the reality of the spiritual realm because the real you is not the person you see in the mirror. The real you is not your outward body. Your body is only the temporary house where you live for a few years before moving out and leaving it behind. Your body allows you to live in this natural realm, but it does not define who you are. The real you is a living spirit, a member of the spirit realm, created by another living spirit, which is the Spirit of God. The real you will live forever in the realm of the Spirit.

One day your body will die and when it does your spirit will leave your body. The time you spent on earth and the choices you made here determine where your spirit goes after the death of your body. Your spirit will then enter into either heaven or hell. Your spirit will never cease to exist.

Therefore it is important to choose who you will serve in this life because whoever you follow now you will continue to follow into eternity. Whoever you serve now you will serve for eternity. Whoever you submit yourself to obey now you will obey for eternity.

There are only two choices available. We must chose between light and dark, clean and unclean, holy and unholy, righteous and unrighteous, good and evil, truth and lies, faith and unbelief. We must choose to follow either the Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of the one true God, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the creator of heaven and earth, or the spirit of this world system, which is the devil, Satan.

So the stage is set for the great battle for the souls of men, a battle that will only be waged for a short time but will have enormous eternal consequences. At stake are the souls of every person on earth. The eternal destiny of every person hangs in the balance. God and His angels have done and are continuing to do everything they can do to help people avoid going to hell. The devil and his host of demons are doing everything they can do to deceive people into following them into hell. Meanwhile, most people on earth are oblivious to the battle, acting like their choices have no eternal significance, blindly thinking this natural realm is the only reality. They are deceived, which is exactly how the devil wants them to be.

Our choices in this life not only determine where we go in the next life but also which spirit is gaining influence over us here and now. None of us are staying in the same place. We are constantly in motion, moving either closer to God or further away from Him. We are constantly making choices as to what to say, what to think, what to read, who to listen to, what to put our eyes on, what to watch on television, what to listen to on the radio, what websites to visit, what movies to watch and on and on. With each choice, we are submitting ourselves to either the Spirit of God or the spirit of this world. With each choice we gain spiritual momentum that helps propel us further in the direction we have chosen, either closer to God or further away from Him. With each choice we grow stronger in our spirit, empowered by the one whom we have chosen to obey, the one whom we have chosen as our master, regardless of whether or not we are even aware of what we have done. We get filled with the spirit of the one whom we obey, which causes us to want to follow more.

The Apostle Paul recognized this and warned the believers in Rome when he wrote to them. He asked them, “Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?” (Romans 6:16)

Every time we choose to obey God, we are following the leading of His Spirit and thereby allowing His Spirit to have greater influence over us. Every act of obedience to God causes our conscience to grow more sensitive and tender towards God, which makes us stronger in our desire to obey Him more. When our conscience does not condemn us, we have greater confidence and faith towards God (1 John 3:21). It is like being in a dark place and taking a step towards a bright light. Each step taken towards the light brings us to a place where we can see more light to help us continue further. The Bible says the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn; it just keeps growing brighter and brighter until the full day (Proverbs 4:18).

On the other hand, every time we choose to disobey God, we are following the leading of the spirit of this world, which is spirit of the devil, thereby allowing the devil to have greater influence over us. As we continue to disobey God, our conscience becomes seared, hardened to the things of God, like a black crusty piece of steak that has been cooked too hot and too long. If we continue to go in this direction, we can get so hardened that we no longer listen to anything that comes from God. We can get so heavily influenced by the lies of the devil that the truth sounds like a foreign language, like nonsense. We can get to the point where we are completely deceived, fully convinced that wrong is right and right is wrong.

Using the analogy of light and darkness, every step we take disobeying God’s commandments is like walking farther and farther away from the light. The farther a person goes in that direction the darker it gets. Eventually, the darkness gets so thick it can cause the person to stumble and fall and get hurt.

So every person on the planet is already getting filled with either the Spirit of God or the spirit of this world. By making choices between these two kingdoms, each person is propelled further into the direction they have chosen, empowered to move closer to God or further away from Him. By acting consistently to obey God or to disobey we can accelerate our movement towards God or away from Him. We can choose to follow a narrow path that will cause us to get more and more filled with the Spirit. If we continue on that path we can eventually get so filled that we are saturated to the point of overflowing. This is the point of being drunk in the Spirit.

The Spirit of God and the spirit of the devil would both like to have as many people as they can get filled with their spirit. More than just being filled, both sides would like to get as many people as they can get to be completely drunk with their spirit because then the people will do whatever they tell them to do.

The Apostle Paul accurately compared being filled with the Spirit to drinking wine (Ephesians 5:18). Just like wine, you can drink a little or a lot. Getting filled with the Spirit of God and the spirit of this world both operate in this same way. In both cases, you can get filled a little to make you feel a little tipsy or you can keep drinking until you get really plastered, completely intoxicated, inebriated, blitzed, blasted, crocked, smashed, tanked, wasted, stoned, loaded, rip-roaring drunk!

Paul instructed the believers in Ephesus to avoid getting drunk with wine or strong drink but instead be filled with the spirit.

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord. Ephesians 5:18-19

Right after Paul mentioned getting drunk with wine and filled with the Spirit he then encouraged believers to sing and making melody with their heart. That is interesting because drunk people are known for singing! Getting drunk and singing just seem to go together. Drunk people forget all their inhibitions. Even people who are normally quiet and reserved when sober are likely to do just about anything when they are drunk. They will sing in public and dance in their underwear if they feel so inclined. Drunk people don’t care what anyone else thinks because they are under the influence of another source.

So getting drunk in the Spirit of God makes you more willing to do what God wants you to do and getting drunk with the spirit of the world makes you more willing to do what the devil wants you to do. In both cases, the drunker you get the more valuable you are to the one you serve because they are able to have more control over your life.

There is an important difference here between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of the devil. While both sides seek willing vessels to do their will, they are very different in the way they go about getting that. God always respects your freedom to choose what you want so He never does anything through you without your permission. By contrast, the devil is a bully with no regard for your will. He will move in by force if given the opportunity to take over your life making you demon-possessed. This is another reason why it is so dangerous to allow yourself to be filled with the spirit of this world.

Getting drunk in the Spirit not only makes you more willing to do the will of your master, it also causes your character to become more like their character so that you act more like them. A person who is drunk in the Spirit of God gains a greater love for people because God loves people. They also get more peace and joy because the kingdom of God consists of these traits. In fact, if a person keeps getting more filled with the Spirit of God, they can sense the peace and joy of the Lord resonating so strongly on the inside of them they can feel it all the way to the core of their being. This is what the whole world is wanting but doesn’t know where to find it. This kind of peace and joy is not affected by or based on the circumstances people are facing because it is coming from the Spirit realm. People who get drunk in the Spirit also enjoy many other positive changes such as an increased appetite for reading the Bible, increased desire to worship God, improved health, stronger family relationships, and increased willingness to put the needs of others ahead of their own needs.

In the same way, people who are drunk with the spirit of the world take on the character traits of the devil. They begin to act just like their spiritual father. Whereas God humbles himself to serve people and bless them, Satan exalts himself and seeks to use people to take whatever he wants from them. So the devil encourages his followers to practice selfishness, lusting for whatever they want then beating on others to take it from them. His kingdom is consumed with lust for money, power, and sexual immorality. His followers take on his character traits so they are also consumed with lust. The more they get filled with the spirit of the world the more they want to disobey the commandments of God and do all sorts of unclean things. They lust after their neighbor’s wife or husband, they commit acts of adultery, fornication, murder and rape. They are bound up with many unclean habits like looking at pornography and masturbating. Since the devil is the father of all lies, people who are drunk with his spirit convince themselves it is okay to lie whenever they want. Since he is a thief, his followers justify stealing. The Bible clearly states that the people who do these things will not enter into the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9 and Galatians 5:21).
