Can Anyone Get Drunk in the Spirit?

Absolutely anyone can get drunk in the Spirit of God if they want to. Jesus stood up on the great day of the feast in Jerusalem and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.” (John 7:37)

Just as the prophet Joel wrote thousands of years ago, God has chosen in these last days to pour out His Spirit on all flesh. The Holy Spirit was first poured out on the day of Pentecost and continues being poured out today on whoever is thirsty for more of Him. He does not force Himself on anyone who does not want Him, but He hears the cries of all who are thirsty.

Because God Adam and Eve dominion in the earth and because they surrendered their dominion to Satan, God no longer has legal grounds to move in the earth unless someone on earth asks Him to move. The cries of the thirsty are all the permission He needs to come to them and pour out His Spirit on them. Once He has permission, He moves in ways that He alone chooses.

Anyone interested in knowing the true God should understand this about Him. He reserves the right to act like God because He alone is the one true God. He does not need to get approval from a deacon board or from anyone. He does not need the church to vote on how He should do things. He is the Almighty God, the maker of heaven and earth. He sits in the very highest place of heaven. There is no one higher than Him.

So when He moves in the earth, He often does it in ways that baffle our human understanding. Even though He has good reasons for doing things the way He does, we often don’t have any idea what they are. For example, when God sent His only begotten son into the world, he baffled the religious leaders of that time as well as many of the people of Israel because of the way He came. Rather than coming as a conquering king, He came humbly, born in a manger, the son of a carpenter. Rather than establishing an earthly kingdom with power and might, He established an unseen heavenly kingdom earth. Then He went to the cross where He willingly laid down His life with a gruesome death.

Many of the leaders of that time mocked Jesus even as He hung on the cross saying, “If you truly are the Son of God then come down from the cross right now and then we will believe.” (Mark 15:32)

The cross was a stumbling stone to that generation and has continued to be a stumbling stone to every generation since that time. God has chosen to use the foolish things of this world to put to shame people who consider themselves to be wise. He has chosen to use the weak things of this world to put to shame people who consider themselves to be strong. (1 Corinthians 1:23-27)

He confounded the spirit of the world with the cross. Then He did it again shortly afterward on the day of Pentecost. Since then, God has continued to move by His Spirit in the earth with outpourings that cause unusual signs and wonders to manifest. People who get filled with the Spirit of God manifest a wide variety of unusual behaviors, which include healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out devils, laughing, crying, jerking, singing, lifting your hands to God, speaking in other tongues, falling down, running, shaking, trembling, dreaming, seeing visions, prophesying, dancing, leaping, shouting, deep breathing, and on and on.

Even though most churches in America have rejected these signs, the Bible is full of them and people who get drunk in the Spirit experience them routinely. Jesus said these signs follow those who have believed (Mark 16:17-18), which explains why these things are not happening in most American churches today. The churches are filled with so much unbelief they even have doctrines making unbelief their official church policy. They make up false doctrines that these things passed away long ago so they don’t have to explain to anyone why God is not manifesting anything in their own life. Church members who are found to be believing that signs and wonders still happen today are often required to leave the church.

We humans have a tendency to get all hung up on the outward manifestations but God is more interested in what is on the inside of us. The Bible says man looks on the outward appearance but God looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). We would be wise to not get hung up on the signs and wonders but instead look beyond them to seek the heart of God.

Focusing on the manifestations causes us to wonder why does the Spirit of God cause people to do these unusual things? We wonder why He causes one person to laugh and another to cry. We wonder why one person acts one way while another acts another way? We wonder why He does not manifest in us the same way He does on someone else.

God chooses to manifest differently on different people for reasons that He does not usually explain to us because what He does in the life of someone else is none of our business. Since we don’t have all the answers we have to make a choice to allow God to be God. We have to trust Him even when we don’t have it all figured out. Instead of wondering about all the manifestations, our attention should be focused on our own relationship with God.

The unusual manifestations of the Spirit of God make some people uncomfortable, but as weird as these things appear to be they serve an important purpose of exposing what is in our heart. The true condition of our heart is exposed by the way we respond to God when He moves among us in ways that go beyond our understanding. Rejecting His ways is the same as rejecting Him personally. Rejecting His ways is evidence to Him that we are not really thirsty for Him, just thirsty for other things that we love more than God.

Those who are prideful will shrink back from God whenever God does unusual things they don’t understand. The prideful call these things spooky and weird and try to put a stop to them. Even though they read about these things in the scriptures, they want nothing to do with them. They trust more in their own understanding than they do in God. The Bible says God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5).

Those who truly love God will allow Him to do things the way He chooses. They will allow God to be God. Imagine that! By faith they accept things that go beyond their understanding because they are so thirsty for God they are willing to look beyond the unusual manifestations as long as they can be closer to Him. So they draw close to God even when they don’t understand everything God is doing among them.

In large part, how filled with the Spirit we get depends on how thirsty for God we are. Even among the twelve disciples of Jesus, three of them were closer to Jesus than the other nine. Peter, James and John were not satisfied to just be part of the ministry of Jesus. Their hearts longed to be close to Jesus. As a result, they were allowed to see more than the other nine. Jesus brought them along when he went up on the mountain and was transfigured as they watched. Peter received revelation of who Jesus was when others were not so sure. Jesus told him he had not received that from flesh and blood but it had been revealed to him by God the Father (Matthew 16:17). John referred to himself as the disciple whom the Lord loved. He was the one who sat next to Jesus at the last supper and even rested his head on the bosom of Jesus. Meanwhile, the other nine were satisfied with just being part of the ministry.

Those who are thirsty and humble will see God move among them with unusual signs and manifestations because they are willing to allow God to do whatever He wants to do in whatever way He chooses to do it. These are the ones who ascend the hill of the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart. They will draw close to God and will have a close relationship with Him.

Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood and has not sworn deceitfully. He shall receive a blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation. (Psalm 24:3-5)

Anyone can get drunk in the Spirit if they are thirsty for more of God and willing to humble themselves before God so they do not get offended when God does things they don’t understand. These are the ones who qualify to draw close to God and tap into the power of the spiritual realm. These are the ones who will be filled and even get drunk in the Spirit of God. These are the ones who will receive power from God to have their lives changed forever!
